With his 43 years of service and commitment to Suppose U Drive, Steve Rubio deserves a permanent spot on our employee hall of fame, and we’re excited to introduce him to all those who haven’t yet had the pleasure of meeting him in person.

One For the Ages

Steve was hired back in 1979 at a time when the company was still being run by Suppose U Drive’s original founders. Steve recalls those early days of the company fondly. “I can still remember when I was first hired and had the pleasure of working with the company’s first generation, Edwin and Millie—they were two great people.”

However, that was just the beginning of Steve’s experience working with Suppose U Drive, as he’s been here through generations of family ownership. “I also had the pleasure of working with second generation Edwin Johnston, Junior. By that point, I not only knew how to repair trucks, but also understood the Rental and Leasing Business side as well,” he says.

About ten years into his career with the company, Steve said he got to see the company “really take off and begin to grow.” It was during this time that he was promoted to Service Manager of the Norwalk shop. Now, 43 years later, Steve works under the third generation of owners, Justin and Cameron Johnston. His current title is Service Manager of the Shop/Maintenance division at the Glendale location.

While excelling in his career at Suppose U Drive, Steve has also accomplished a number of personal milestones. He’s been married to his wife Judy for 35 years and they have four children together along with two grandchildren. When he isn’t working, Steve enjoys spending time with his family, going camping, and relaxing at home.

Over Four Decades of Change

As you can imagine over the past four decades, Steve says that his tenure has been both interesting and a little challenging at times. “I’ve seen the industry and the technology change so much, and I can honestly say that I have had a very pleasant journey working for Suppose U Drive and the Johnston family.”

In a day and age where change is never-ending, it often seems routine for employees to switch jobs every few years, and that is what makes Steve’s story such an inspiration. Since Suppose U Drive initially opened its doors in 1936, the Johnston family has operated with a foundation of customer satisfaction and family values. It began with a mere three rental trucks and one location, and has today grown to house a large inventory in multiple facilities across Southern California. Now, with the most recent addition of the Ontario facility and the continuous acquisition of vehicles, Steve said he believes a 1,000-truck goal isn’t too far down the road.

Still, despite its growth, Suppose U Drive remains committed to offering customers a wide variety of business and budget-friendly solutions. And just as we credit much of our success to our customers, it’s our valuable, loyal, and exceptional employees like Steve who keep the company going. In return, we strive to provide a home-like environment that offers fair compensation, competitive benefits, and financial stability that families can depend on for generations. Literally.

When You Work Here, You’re Family

As for Steve, he’s one of the most recognizable employees here at Suppose U Drive, almost as well-known as the founders themselves. And, like all of our prized employees, he’s a core part of the Suppose U Drive family.
